About our Tulum office
EasyWay's Tulum office is on Avenida Tulum in the town center, between Calle Géminis Norte and Calle Libra Norte, a few minutes' drive from the beach road and the archaeological site. Every rental includes third-party liability insurance, unlimited mileage and 24/7 roadside assistance, with no hidden fees: the all-inclusive price you see online is the price you pay at the counter.
How the Tulum office works
We are open every day from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. You can pick up and return your car at the office, or ask us to deliver it to your hotel in Tulum town, Aldea Zamá or the hotel zone (subject to availability; tell us where you are staying when you book). Bring your driver's license, passport and a credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit.
Flying into Tulum International Airport (TQO)? The airport is about 25 km south of town. Contact us before your flight and we will coordinate your pickup.
Pick up at Cancun Airport, drop off in Tulum
Most of our Tulum customers land at Cancun International Airport (CUN). You have two options:
- Round trip from Cancun: pick up and return at our Cancun Airport office, with free shuttle from the terminal. No extra fee.
- One-way CUN → Tulum: pick up at Cancun Airport and return the car at our Tulum office. A fixed drop-off fee applies by vehicle category (see the table below) and you skip the return trip and the transfer.
The drive is about 118 km (73 miles) along Federal Highway 307, a well-maintained road that runs past Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Akumal. Allow between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours, more on Friday and Sunday afternoons. Watch for topes (speed bumps) at the entrance of every town.
Driving and parking in Tulum
Town center
Streets are flat and easy to navigate. Street parking is free on most blocks of the center; look for the white "E" signs and avoid yellow curbs.
Hotel zone and beach road
The beach road (Carretera Tulum–Boca Paila) is paved but narrow and busy between noon and sunset. Most hotels and beach clubs have parking for guests, and the public lots near the beach charge a daily rate. Arriving early or after 4:00 PM makes a big difference.
Archaeological site
The Tulum ruins have a paid parking lot at the entrance on Highway 307. Arrive before 9:00 AM to beat the tour buses and the heat.
Cenotes and day trips you can only do by car
This is the real reason to rent a car in Tulum. Gran Cenote, Cenote Calavera, Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote and the cenotes along the road to Cobá are all 5 to 45 minutes from town and have no public transport. With a car you can also reach:
- Cobá (45 minutes): Mayan ruins in the jungle, best explored by bike.
- Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve: the Boca Paila road past the hotel zone is unpaved and rough after rain. An SUV is the better choice here.
- Akumal and Xel-Há (20 to 30 minutes): snorkeling with sea turtles.
- Bacalar (about 2.5 hours): the seven-color lagoon, an easy overnight trip.
Do you need a Jeep or SUV in Tulum?
Not for most trips. Highway 307, the road to Cobá and the beach road are paved, so a compact or midsize car is enough and cheaper on fuel. Choose an SUV if you travel with more than three people and luggage, plan to drive the unpaved road into Sian Ka'an, or simply want more ground clearance for the speed bumps. A Jeep is a fun option for the beach road at a slightly higher daily rate; compare the real prices in the list below.
Practical tips
- Gas stations: there are several on Highway 307 in Tulum and in every town along the way. Pay in pesos or by card, and check that the pump starts at zero.
- Night driving: the highway is unlit between towns and wildlife can cross. Keep to the speed limit and, if you can, plan to arrive before dark.
- Checkpoints: police and military checkpoints on the 307 are routine. Keep your license and rental contract at hand.
- Cash: parking lots, cenotes and some beach clubs are cash only. Carry some Mexican pesos.
