Guide for Renting a Car in Cancun: What You Need to Know
Everything first-time visitors should know before booking — requirements, real costs, insurance, driving tips, and how to avoid the most common traps at Cancun International Airport (CUN). Written by a local rental company operating since 2009.
What You Need to Rent a Car in Cancun
Mexican rental law is strict but predictable. Bring these four things and pickup takes minutes — not hours.
Valid Driver's License
From your home country. U.S., Canadian, EU, UK and Australian licenses are accepted as-is. An International Driving Permit is recommended but not mandatory.
Passport
Required for identity verification at pickup. The name must match your reservation exactly — if you booked with a middle name, bring the passport that shows it.
Major Credit Card
Visa, Mastercard or AmEx in the main driver's name. Debit cards are not accepted under Mexican rental law — this is true for every rental company in Mexico, not just us.
Minimum Age 21
Drivers must be at least 21 years old. Premium and full-size SUVs require drivers 25+. Unlike some competitors, we don't charge a young-driver surcharge.
Heads-up: bring a physical credit card. Virtual cards (Apple Pay, Google Pay, virtual numbers from your bank) cannot be used for the security hold required by Mexican law.
How Renting a Car in Cancun Actually Works
Step by step — from booking online to driving off — so you know exactly what to expect when you land at CUN.
Book Online (or by Phone)
Choose your dates, pickup location and car category on our site. No upfront deposit is required to lock the rate. You'll get a confirmation email within minutes with your total — taxes and basic insurance already included.
Land at Cancun Airport (CUN)
Once you clear customs, head outside Terminal 3 or 4 (whichever you arrived at) and look for the EasyWay sign. Text us your flight number in advance so we're already tracking your arrival — no waiting at counters inside the terminal.
Take the Free Shuttle
Our shuttle covers the 5–10 minute ride to our office just outside the airport. Air-conditioned, free of charge, and big enough for your luggage. This is the part where you skip the 1–3 hour wait at on-airport counters.
Sign Paperwork & Inspect the Car
A short, transparent contract — we'll walk you through any optional coverage (CDW, theft protection) without pressure. Then do a quick walk-around of the car with our agent. Take photos if you want; we encourage it.
Drive Off & Enjoy
Keys in hand, fuel level noted, your phone has our 24/7 number saved. Total time from landing to driving: usually 30–45 minutes versus 2–3 hours at traditional airport counters.
Flight delayed? No problem. We track your arrival in real time and there's no late-pickup fee. Just message us on WhatsApp and we'll be there whenever you land.
Driving in Cancun: What to Know Before You Go
Cancun is one of the easiest places in Mexico to drive as a tourist, but a few local details will save you time, money, and stress.
Stick to the Toll Roads
Mexican toll highways (look for "cuota" signs) are fast, safe, and well-maintained. The 305D to Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and the 180D to Mérida, are the ones you'll likely use. Pay in cash (pesos) or with our optional TAG. Free "libre" roads exist but are slower and pass through small towns.
Gas Stations (Pemex)
Pemex is the national chain. Service is full-service — you don't pump your own gas. Watch the pump reset to zero before the attendant starts, pay in pesos for the best rate, and tip 5–10 pesos. Most stations don't accept foreign cards, so carry cash.
Police & Military Checkpoints
Routine and safe. Pull over when signaled, lower your window, smile, and present your driver's license. They may ask where you're going. You don't pay anything if you haven't done anything wrong — and if anyone asks for cash, request a written ticket and call us. We'll handle it.
Pesos vs. Dollars
Tolls, gas stations, taquerias and small shops want pesos. Bigger hotels and tourist restaurants accept dollars but at a poor exchange rate. ATMs at the airport and convenience stores (OXXO) work with foreign debit cards. We can also accept payment in dollars or pesos when you pick up.
Day-trip ideas from Cancun: Tulum ruins (2 hrs south), Chichén Itzá (2.5 hrs west), Cobá (1.5 hrs), Cenote Dos Ojos near Tulum, Bacalar lagoon (4 hrs south). A rental car pays for itself the first day you skip an organized tour.
Off-Airport vs. Inside-Airport Counters
The single biggest decision in this guide for renting a car in Cancun: where you actually pick up the vehicle. Here's the honest comparison.
| What You Care About | Off-Airport (EasyWay) | Inside Airport Counters |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup wait time | 5–10 minutes | 1–3 hours |
| Hidden fees at the counter | ✓ None — total is what you pay | ✗ Frequent surprise add-ons |
| Fuel pre-purchase pressure | ✓ Never forced | ✗ Common aggressive upsell |
| Insurance transparency | ✓ Basic included, add-ons clear | ✗ Bundled, hard to opt out |
| 24/7 bilingual roadside help | ✓ Always available | ✗ Limited hours |
| Free cancellation | ✓ Up to 24 hrs before pickup | ✗ Often non-refundable |
The Price You See Is the Price You Pay
The biggest pain point in any guide to renting a car in Cancun is the gap between online quote and final invoice. Here's exactly what's already in your quote with us:
