A passenger van rental in Cancun solves the problem that ruins group trips: everyone arriving separately. Ten people in two cars means two drivers navigating, two sets of directions, two parking spots at every stop, and one car always waiting for the other. One van means the group leaves together, arrives together, and the conversation continues the whole way to Chichén Itzá.

The Van, Specifically

We run one large van, so there is no guessing about what turns up. This is it.

Chevrolet Express Van 2022 Detail
Seats 12, including the driver
Luggage 6 large suitcases plus 2 carry-on bags
Transmission Automatic
Doors 4, with a side sliding door
Air conditioning Yes, throughout the cabin
Other equipment USB port, auxiliary input, CD player, airbags
Mileage Unlimited, like every rental we do
Where you can collect it Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mérida

Twelve seats is the real capacity, and we would rather say so plainly than let a group of fourteen arrive and find out at the counter. If you are more than twelve, the answer is a van plus a car, and we will help you work out which split makes sense.

One Van or Two Cars? An Honest Comparison

The van does not win on every line. Here is where it does and where it does not.

What matters One van Two cars
The group travels together Always Until the first wrong turn
Drivers needed One Two, both navigating
One-way fee, Cancun to Tulum $120 once $100 each, so $200
Parking in Playa or Tulum One large space to find Two easy spaces
Security deposit held Higher on one card Split across two cards
Luggage for a big group 6 large cases in one boot Tetris, twice
Splitting up for a day Not possible Easy

Short version: the van wins when the group moves as one unit and carries a lot. Two cars win when people want to do different things on different days. Tell us the plan and we will say which we would book.

The Numbers a Group Organiser Needs

The ones that usually appear as a surprise somewhere else. All in US dollars.

Security deposit on the van

A hold on one credit card in the main driver's name, released when you bring the van back. How much depends entirely on the coverage you take:

$6,000 with Basic coverage

$2,500 with Medium

$1,500 with Full

This is the single biggest thing to plan for on a van. Check the card's available limit before you travel.

The other line items

Additional driver — $3 per day. On a group trip, add a second. Taking turns on the run to Bacalar is worth far more than it costs, and an unlisted driver voids the coverage.

Glass and tyre protection — $40 per day. No coverage level in Mexico includes tyres or glass, and a van carries more weight over the same potholes.

One-way to another office — $80 to $170 depending on the route, charged once.

Child seats — $7, boosters $5 per day. Flat, not per child per day of panic at the counter.

What the van itself costs

We will not print one daily rate, because it genuinely moves with the season — the van ranges from around $45 a day in the quietest weeks to about $180 over Christmas and New Year, before insurance and tax. A weekly rate brings the daily figure down noticeably. Put your dates in and the exact all-in total appears before you commit to anything.

Who Rents the Van

Six trips we handle constantly, and what each one usually needs.

Destination weddings

Moving guests between the hotel, the ceremony and dinner without booking a shuttle for every leg. Usually a longer rental with two or three named drivers.

Multi-family holidays

Two or three families in one villa. Child seats and boosters get added here more than anywhere else, and they are priced per day, not per family.

Dive and fishing groups

Gear is the reason. Six large cases of tanks, fins and rods fit where they would not in two sedans, and the cenote road is easier in one vehicle.

Corporate and incentive trips

Teams that arrive on one flight and need one invoice. We can bill the rental to the company and add several drivers to the contract.

Airline crews and long stays

Crews rotating through Cancun who want one vehicle for the whole stay rather than daily transfers. Weekly rates make a real difference here.

The Chichén Itzá day

One long drive that a group does together. Leaving at dawn in your own van beats a coach that stops wherever its schedule says.

Driving a Van on This Coast

If you have driven a large SUV, you can drive this. It is automatic, the visibility is good and Highway 307 is a wide, divided road. There are four things worth knowing before you set off.

Topes are harder on a loaded van. Mexican speed bumps appear at every town entrance, sometimes unmarked, and a van carrying twelve people and luggage hits them with a great deal more weight. Slow to walking pace. This is the single most common way vans get damaged here.

Parking needs a plan in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Both are tight, and the Tulum beach road especially so. Use the paid lots a street back rather than circling, and arrive early at beach clubs.

Fuel is a bigger number. A van drinks more than a compact and is measured in litres, so a fill is a larger figure than you may expect. Stations are full-service and mostly want cash in pesos.

Check the tyres before the long drive. Our team does at handover, but on a loaded vehicle it is worth a second look before Bacalar or Mérida. If anything feels wrong, call us before continuing.

We brief every driver on all of this at pickup. If you want the full version, our guide to driving in Cancun covers the rules, the tolls, the gas stations and the checkpoints.

If Twelve Is More Than You Need

For seven people or fewer, a minivan is usually the better vehicle: cheaper per day, a smaller deposit, far easier to park, and still room for five large suitcases. We run the Dodge Grand Caravan (automatic) and the VW Caddy (manual), both 2022, both with air conditioning.

The deposit on a minivan is $4,000 with Basic, $2,000 with Medium or $1,000 with Full — considerably lighter on a single credit card than the van. Glass and tyre protection is $35 a day rather than $40.

The honest dividing line is eight people. At eight you need the van; at seven the minivan wins on almost every measure.

Passenger Van Rental — Frequently Asked Questions

What group organisers ask us before booking.

Our large van seats twelve including the driver, and that is the honest number. For a group of more than twelve the usual answer is the van plus a car, which also gives you the flexibility to split up for a day. Write to us with the group size and the dates and we will put together the combination that costs least.
$6,000 with Basic coverage, $2,500 with Medium or $1,500 with Full. It is a hold on a credit card in the main driver's name, not a charge, and it is released when the van comes back. Because the figure is substantial, check your available credit before travelling — taking fuller coverage is the normal way groups bring it down.
Yes, and on a group trip you should. Each additional driver is $3 per day and has to be named on the contract with their licence — a driver who is not listed voids the coverage entirely, which on a van is a risk nobody wants. Bring the licences of everyone who might drive to the pickup.
Twelve seats and six large suitcases plus two carry-ons is the rated capacity, and that is comfortable for a group of eight to ten with full luggage. Twelve adults each with a large case is tight — if that is your situation, tell us when you book and we will talk through whether a second vehicle makes the airport run easier.
Yes. Our free shuttle collects you at Cancun Airport and takes you to the office about ten minutes away, where the van is waiting. With a large group, tell us the flight number and how many of you there are when you book so we send a vehicle that fits everyone in one trip.
Earlier than you would a car. We hold far fewer vans than compacts, and in high season they go first — weddings and family groups tend to book months ahead. Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before pickup, so reserving early costs you nothing and protects the vehicle your whole trip depends on.

Keep the Group Together

Put in your dates and group size and see the full price — van, coverage, tax and deposit — before you commit. We hold limited units, so early is better.
