Cancun Car Rental Insurance, Explained

Mexican Rental Car Insurance Is Where Most Cancun Trips Go Wrong

Not because the rules are complicated, but because almost nobody explains them before you are standing at a counter with your family behind you. Here is the whole thing, in advance, with our actual coverage levels and deposits.

See What Each Level Covers

The Short Answer

Third-party liability is required by Mexican law and you cannot drive legally without it. Every one of our three coverage levels includes it, so whichever you pick, you are covered on that point.

Your US or Canadian credit card cannot replace it. Card benefits cover damage to the rental car (CDW), never your liability toward other people. This single misunderstanding is responsible for most of the arguments that happen at rental counters in Cancun.

Nothing in Mexico covers tires, mirrors and glass by default — not our Full level, not anyone else's. That is a separate add-on, and on these roads it is the one worth thinking about.

More coverage means a smaller hold on your credit card. The exact figures are in the deposit table further down, and they are the same ones our system quotes you.

Why Your Credit Card Coverage Is Not Enough in Mexico

Card issuers in the United States and Canada often include a rental car benefit, and in Mexico it usually does apply — to collision damage on the car you rented. That is real coverage and worth using if you have it. The problem is what it does not touch.

Mexican law makes third-party liability compulsory: the coverage that responds when you injure someone or damage someone else's property. No credit card sells you that, because it is not a card product. It has to come from a Mexican policy, which is why every rental company here — including us — has it in the contract, and why a rate advertised without it is not a real rate.

So the honest decision is not "insurance yes or no". It is: liability is coming regardless, and the question is whether you also want the rental company handling damage to the vehicle, or whether you would rather rely on your card and post a larger deposit. Both are legitimate. We will explain which is which at the office and we will not argue with your choice.

One practical note: if you plan to use your card's coverage, call the issuer before your trip, ask specifically about Mexico, and bring the written confirmation. Cards differ, and some exclude Mexico outright.

Our Three Coverage Levels, Side by Side

Every quote on this site arrives with the middle level preselected. You can move up or down and the total updates in front of you.

What it covers Basic
TPL
Medium
most booked
Full
all included
Third-party liability, raised from $350,000 to $2,500,000 MXN
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) — damage to your rental car
Theft Protection (TP)
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
Extra Protection Cover (EPC) — your deductible 10% deductible 0% deductible
Tires, mirrors and glass

The daily cost of each level depends on the vehicle category and the season, so we do not publish a single figure that would be wrong half the year. Your quote shows the exact amount for your dates before you pay anything, and you can switch levels and watch the total change.

What a Deductible Actually Means Here

A deductible is the slice of a repair bill that stays with you. In Mexico it is normally expressed as a percentage of the vehicle's value, not a flat dollar amount, which surprises a lot of North American drivers who are used to "$500 deductible".

That percentage is what Extra Protection Cover (EPC) reduces. Our Medium level brings it down to 10%. Our Full level brings it to 0% — the point of that level is that a dented door stops being a financial event and becomes a paperwork event.

With Basic, there is no EPC and no CDW at all, so damage to the car is yours to resolve, either out of pocket or through the credit card benefit you verified before the trip. That is the trade-off, and it is also why the deposit is largest at that level.

The Security Deposit, Published in Advance

A hold on a credit card in the main driver's name, released after you return the car. Not a charge. The more coverage you take, the less we need to hold.

Vehicle category With Basic With Medium With Full
Compact $1,000 $500 $300
Midsize $1,500 $700 $500
Full size $2,000 $1,000 $700
SUV $2,500 $1,500 $900
Minivan $4,000 $2,000 $1,000
Express Van $6,000 $2,500 $1,500

It has to be a credit card

In the main driver's name, and not a debit card. That is standard across the industry in Mexico, not a rule we invented. Bring the same card you used to book.

Amounts are in US dollars

The hold reduces your available credit for the length of the rental, so check your limit before you travel — especially if you are taking a van with the Basic level.

Tires, Mirrors and Glass: the Gap Nobody Mentions

No coverage level in Mexico includes them — not ours, not the airport counters'. It is an industry-wide exclusion, and on the roads around here it is the damage people actually get.

Highway 307 is fine. The last kilometre to a cenote often is not: loose gravel, potholes after the rainy season, and a lot of small stones travelling at windshield height. A cracked windshield or a shredded sidewall is the most common claim we see, and without this add-on it comes straight out of your deposit.

Which Level Fits Your Trip

There is no universally correct answer. There is an answer that fits how you travel.

Basic

For drivers who confirmed in writing that their credit card covers collision damage in Mexico, are comfortable fronting a repair and claiming it back later, and have enough available credit for the larger hold. Experienced Mexico travelers, usually. It still carries the liability coverage the law requires.

Medium

The one most of our customers choose and the one preselected in your quote. Damage and theft are handled by us, your exposure is capped at a 10% deductible, and the hold on your card drops by roughly half. The sensible default for a first trip to the Yucatán.

Full

Zero deductible and the smallest deposit we offer. For families, for anyone driving long distances to Bacalar or Chichén Itzá, and for travelers who would rather pay a known amount now than think about any of this again during the holiday.

What No Coverage Level Will Pay For

Worth reading once, because these are the situations where any rental company in Mexico will decline a claim and charge the deposit:

Driving under the influence

Alcohol or drugs void the coverage entirely. No exceptions, anywhere in Mexico.

A driver who is not on the contract

Add anyone who might drive as an additional driver. It costs a few dollars a day and keeps the coverage valid.

Tires, mirrors and glass

Excluded from every level, which is exactly why the Glass & Tire Protection add-on exists.

Fuel, tolls and traffic fines

These are not insurance matters at all. They stay with the driver, as they would at home.

Cancun Rental Car Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we answer at the counter every single day.

Third-party liability is, yes — Mexican law requires it and you cannot legally drive a rental car without it. What is optional is everything else: collision damage, theft protection, the reduced deductible and the glass and tire add-on. All three of our levels include the mandatory liability, so the real choice is how much of the optional side you want.
For collision damage, often yes — and if you confirmed it in writing with your issuer, the Basic level is a perfectly reasonable choice. For third-party liability, no: that is not something a card can provide, so it comes from the Mexican policy either way. Expect a larger deposit when you rely on your card, since we are carrying more risk on the vehicle.
Because on comparison sites the car rate is the bait and the coverage is where the money is made. A headline rate of a dollar a day only works if the mandatory coverage is sold separately at the counter, at a price you could not see while booking. We quote both parts together so the comparison is honest, which makes our first number look higher and our last number usually lower.
Call us first — before moving the car if anyone is hurt or another vehicle is involved, because in Mexico an adjuster has to see the scene for the claim to stand. After that it depends on your level: with Full you owe nothing on the vehicle damage, with Medium you cover 10%, and with Basic the repair is yours to handle. In all three cases tires, mirrors and glass are separate unless you took the add-on.
We release the hold when you return the car and we inspect it together. How quickly it reappears on your available credit is up to your bank rather than us — usually a few days. Because it is a hold and not a charge, the money never actually leaves your account; it is simply reserved while you have the vehicle.
Yes, and it changes both the daily price and the deposit — which is also why we would rather you decide online, with the numbers in front of you, than at a desk with a queue behind you. Whatever you pick, we will explain the trade-off once and then respect your answer.
