Which car to choose for the Yucatán

Almost every route from Merida is paved, so a compact or midsize car with good air conditioning is the most comfortable and the cheapest to run in the heat. Pick a full size car or SUV if you travel with four or more people and luggage, and a minivan for larger groups. An SUV is also handy if you plan to follow the dirt tracks to the cenotes around Homún and Cuzamá.

One-way from Cancun to Merida

Many travelers land in Cancun and fly out of Merida, or the other way around. You can pick up at our Cancun Airport office and return the car in Merida (or the reverse) for a fixed drop-off fee that depends on the vehicle category; the exact amount is shown before you book. Driving in Merida: what to know

• The grid. Streets are numbered: even numbers run north to south, odd numbers east to west, and most downtown streets are one way.
• Parking. Street parking in the center is scarce; use a paid lot near the Plaza Grande or Santa Lucía and check its closing time.
• Heat. Park in the shade and never leave valuables in the car.
• Tolls and fuel. The 180D toll road takes cash in pesos. Fill up before the Ruta Puuc and before the highway to Cancun.
• Night driving. Rural roads are unlit and have speed bumps in every village. Plan to arrive before dark.

What do I need to rent a car in Merida?

A valid driver's license, your passport or official ID, and a credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit. The deposit amount depends on the vehicle category and the insurance you choose.

Is the airport shuttle really free?

Can I return the car at the airport or in another city?

You can choose the Merida Airport, the downtown office or a hotel as return place. Returning in another city, such as Cancun, carries a fixed one-way fee shown before you book.

What if my flight arrives late at night?

The office is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. If your flight lands outside those hours, contact us before you travel so we can confirm what is possible.

Can I cancel for free?

Yes, up to 48 hours before the pickup time. After that, the terms in our cancellation policy apply.
